William Wong Receives Scholarship at Randolph-Macon Academy

2011 Dec 1

William Wong, the son of Carol Cheng of Front Royal, has received the Garth '34 & Helen Payne Scholarship at Randolph-Macon Academy. Mr. and Mrs. Payne established this scholarship through a Society of 1892 bequest, providing scholarships for Front Royal and Warren County area students to attend Randolph-Macon Academy. The family asked that preference be given to day students. The Payne family has a long history with R-MA. Garth ’34, and his uncles, Stewart ’18 and Roger ’27, all attended the Academy. Garth and Helen’s son, Hayden ’54, graduated from R-MA and West Point. Sonner-Payne Hall is named for Mr. Stewart Payne ’18, a long-time trustee and Dr. WW Sonner. In 2002, the school’s library was re-named for Mr. and Mrs. Payne to thank them for their dedicated support of Randolph-Macon Academy students.

William was formally presented with the scholarship during a ceremony held during Fall Family Weekend on November 5, 2011. He is an eighth grade student at Randolph-Macon Academy Middle School.

Randolph-Macon Academy (R-MA), founded in 1892, is a college-preparatory, coeducational boarding school for students in grades 6 through 12. Students in grades 9-12 participate in R-MA's 91st Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC), which is currently recognized as an Outstanding Unit with Merit, and have the opportunity to participate in the Academy's unique flight program. R-MA is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and is located in Front Royal, VA.
